Rain Begins To Move In

More rain has made into East Tennessee and some of this could be heavy at times. So don't be caught out without your umbrella today. chances of rain continue tonight then some clearing possible Wednesday before the next system. The next system expected to affect the area Friday into Friday night. This activity could linger into Saturday, but should be out before the game against South Carolina. It will cool for the game so dress warm.

More Rain And Then A Cold Snap

Well folks the rain continues to plague the area with good chances of rain through Friday and small chances continue Saturday. Remember to monitor forecasts and information in case there are any warnings or watches prompted.

The next topic of discussion is the chance for a cold snap coming in by Saturday night. Expect low temperatures to be 10 to 15 degrees colder then lows tonight. Anyone with animals or plants should monitor the forecast for any changes in these temperatures as we near the end of the week. Also with some lingering moisture I would not rule out the chance of rain and snow mix in the higher elevations on Saturday night. Keep in mind that this is a long way away and we will need to continue fine tuning the forecast as the week progresses.

Most of you across East Tennessee have seen your fair share of the wet stuff and looks like this week we will see plenty more. Looking at the 9:20 AM radar with surface analysis we can see a trof that has setup over the area. This will help the rain continue through much of the day. Right now it does appear this rain activity will be light and moderate. There are no flood watches or warnings out for this system at this time. The chances of rain decrease tonight into Tuesday with rain increasing again for Tuesday night through Friday. If you have any outdoor plans this week continue to monitor the forecast for changes as you get closer to your event.

Rain Falls Apart

Looking at the surface analysis with radar you can see that very little rain is present across the East Tennessee area. There was a line a showers that stayed together till the Plateau. After going over the plateau we see the amount of rain is much less. The chances of rain have been brought down to 30%. Looking above at the radar at 10:30 showers are mostly confined to Scott, Anderson, Claiborne, and Union counties. Remember that not all areas will see this activity and chances will continue to fall as the cold front moves through the area. Expect a great weekend with mostly sunny skies lows in the 40s and highs in the 70s.

Not As Cool

Well folks the temperatures this morning not quite as cool as expected with most areas staying the lower to mid 50s. This was due to some cloud cover across much of the area through the night. We might get cooler tonight with clear skies and lows expected to reach the mid 40s. Wonderful day for Thursday with sunny skies and mid 70s and then back to some showers and thunderstorms for your Friday. This same system will produce some severe weather in parts of the Midwest. Looks like clearing will come for the weekend with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s and highs in the lower to mid 70s.

Flooding Possible

Well folks the rainy times continue as we go into the weekend. From the map of much of Tennessee you can see is under a flash flood watch. This watch has been posted till Saturday evening. If you live in flood prone areas it is strongly advised to pay close attention to changing weather. Monitor local TV or NOAA Weather Radio for any further statements or warnings. Once we get to Sunday and Monday expect clearing to begin. Another big change will be the temperatures as we get to Monday and Tuesday with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s and highs in the mid to lower 70s. This will be a nice change to the spring/summer like pattern we have endured for so long.

Flooding Chances Move In

Well the flooding that we saw across parts of West and Middle Tennessee have moved into parts of East Tennessee. As you can see by the watch and warning map from the Storm Prediction Center. Keep in mind that not everyone will see the flooding rains, but as usual with a system like this some will see their fair share. The system providing this moisture is still related to the low pressure that was sitting in the Texas area earlier this week. Even after this system moves out it does appear that another system in the west will move in and that keeps the chances of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for most of the week. I would expect some clearing at the end of the week with less chances of rain. Beside today expect highs to be in the 80s and lows will stay in the in the 60s for the week.

Looks like this rain is continuing to stick around the area with numerous showers and a few thunderstorms possible through the day. The best chances of rain will be today through Monday. Then as we go through the week our chances come down and we may begin to see some clearing. High temperatures will be the upper 70s to lower and mid 80 and lows in the mid to upper 60s.

Well folks not much will change across East Tennessee today with good chances of showers and thunderstorms through Monday with the best chance showing up for Wednesday. This is caused by a tropical low pressure system still located over Louisiana this morning and a stalled out front over much of the area. The flash flood and flood watches continue in the middle and west portions of the state. These areas have gotten the bulk of the moisture from the system over the past week. The map below will show some estimates from observers in the middle portion of the state.

Those of you who have made it to Gainesville will have the possibility to see some showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. These showers and thunderstorms will be scattered and so watch the radar prior to the game. Highs are expected to be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Sorry for the long vacation if you will from the blog, but with school and work it was almost impossible to continue. Things have stabilized now, but could become busy as this school year gets underway.

Enough of that lets talk about the weather well for East Tennessee this week it has been a wet pattern due to a tropical low pressure system in the northern Louisiana area. This low pressure system will keep the chances for showers and thunderstorms in the forecast through most of the period. Looking at radar at this hour we have several scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area with the heaviest showers are over Monroe and Blount county. These showers and storms will continue to develop and move off to the NE. Keep in mind not everyone will see these showers, but some of you will see your fair share.

This rain has prompted some flooding in the middle and western parts of Tennessee where there are several counties under a flash flood watch.

Well many of you will be traveling to watch the Vols play against Florida on Saturday and well the moisture will be there in Gainesville as it has been across Tennessee with the National Weather Service calling for a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. These will mainly be during the afternoon so we will have to watch the radar as game time gets closer, so you might want to have your poncho handy in case there is some shower activity in The Swamp. Also expect some warm temperatures with highs in the in the upper 80s.

A new watch has been issued which includes most of East Tennessee. Expect the line of dangerous thunderstorms in middle Tennessee to move into the region as we go through the afternoon.

The PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) Tornado Watch has been extended to include the rest of East Tennessee. That means all of East Tennessee is under a Tornado Watch of some type.

There are several reports of injuries in parts of middle Tennessee as well as numerous tornado warnings.

Once again continue to monitor this serious weather situation.

Severe weather with possible tornadoes have started developing to the west of Nashville. This system will be moving into the East Tennessee area as we go into the afternoon and evening.

There is a tornado watch for the following counties in East Tennessee: Anderson, Bledsoe, Bradley, Campbell, Hamilton, Knox, Loudon Marrion, McMinn, Meigs, Morgan Rhea, Roane, Scott, and Sequatchie. This watch has to title of PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) meaning there is a high probability of VERY LARGE HAIL, HIGH WINDS, and TORNADOES.

Severe Weather Awareness Week:

Today's topic: Flooding

Flooding and Flash Flooding are the number one weather related killer!

Most flood deaths occur at night and when people become trapped in automobiles that stall in areas that are flooded.

Flash floods occur within a few minutes or up to 6 hours after excessive rainfall, a dam or levee

failure, or a sudden release of water held by an ice jam or mud slide. Flash floods can tear out trees and destroy buildings and bridges.

Because flash floods happen in a short period of time, generally less than six hours, they are

more life threatening than general floods or river flooding. Areas most susceptible to flash

flooding are mountainous streams and rivers, urban areas, low-lying areas, storm drains, and culverts. The mountain regions of middle and east Tennessee have potentially more flash flood problems than west Tennessee but all parts of the state are susceptible.

The National Weather Service issues a Flood Watch when conditions are detected that can

result in either flood or flash flooding within a designated area, but the occurrence is neither certain nor imminent.

Persons in the watch area are advised to check flood action plans, keep informed, and be ready to take action if a warning is issued or flooding is observed.

A Flash Flood Warning is issued when flash flooding has been reported or is imminent. It

focuses on specific communities, streams or areas where flooding is imminent or occurring.

RIVER FLOODING: This type of flood is caused by an increased water level in an established watercourse, such as a river, creek, or drainage ditch. River flooding is generally slower to develop than flash flooding. There can be exceptions to this, especially with some smaller rivers where the time lag between the runoff from heavy rain and the onset of flooding can be very short. This can by the case with several east Tennessee rivers and streams. On the other hand, it may take several days for a flood crest to pass downstream points on major rivers.

The National Weather Service issues River Flood Warnings when rivers are expected to

rise above flood stage in less than six hours. Persons in the warned area are advised to take necessary precautions immediately. River stages and crest forecasts are given for selected forecast points along with known flood stages for each forecast point.

While there is usually more advanced warning time with river floods than with flash floods,

persons should be familiar with the flood prone areas they live and work in, and must know what action to take and where to go if a flood occurs. Advance planning and preparation is essential.

FLOOD SAFETY RULES:

Get out of areas subject to flooding. These include dips, low spots,

stream beds, drainage ditches and culverts. If caught in low areas during

flooding, go to high ground immediately.

Avoid already flooded and high velocity flow areas. A rapidly flowing

stream or ditch can sweep you off your feet or even sweep your car

downstream.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood

conditions.

Do not drive through flooded areas. The road bed may be washed away.

Play it safe. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!

If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground.

The rising water may engulf the vehicle and the occupants inside.

Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams or washes during

threatening conditions.

When a Flash Flood WARNING is issued for your area act quickly to save

yourself. You may only have seconds.

Today's Topic: Lightning

What is Lightning?

The action of rising and descending air within a thunderstorm separates positive and negative electrical charges. Lightning results from the buildup and discharge of electrical energy between these positively and negatively charged areas. Lightning charges may reach as high as 100 million volts. This electrical charge is always searching for the path of least resistance to complete the circuit.

Lightning will normally strike the tallest object in the area of the potential discharge. Tall trees, light poles and telephone lines are frequent targets for lightning strikes. Lightning is always a potential killer. Whether the storm is a large spring time severe storm or the more common afternoon variety, it contains this deadly killer. It may strike an isolated tree or an object out in the open, or it may strike you.

Keep in mind that you do not have to be standing directly beneath a cloud to be hit. Lightning may strike many miles from the parent storm. In an average year lightning will claim more victims than tornadoes or hurricanes.

EVERY THUNDERSTORM CONTAINS LIGHTNING.

Lightning Safety Rules—Outdoors

Seek shelter inside a house, large building or an all metal vehicle with the windows rolled up (avoid convertibles).

If your hair stands on end and your skin tingles... lightning is about to strike. Take cover

immediately!

If you can't find appropriate shelter, get down to avoid being the highest point for a lightning discharge. When caught in the open, seek shelter in a low area. Crouch down and cover your head with your hands. If you are with a group of people, everyone should scatter out before crouching.

If caught in a wooded area seek out the area with the smallest trees. Stand at least five feet

from the trunk of the nearest tree to avoid flying bark, should the tree be hit by lightning.

When boating, head for shore and get into a shelter, or vehicle. If caught in a boat, lie

down in the boat with cushions between you and the boat's side and bottom.

AVOID

Large trees, hilltops and other high places.

Chain link fences and any other metal fences like those around ball parks and play grounds.

Motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, small metal sheds, bicycles, tractors and farm equipment that does not have an enclosed metal cab.

Do you know what group of people are most likely to get struck by lightning? It is farmers,

followed then by golfers.

Today's Topic: Severe Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms can strike any time of the year. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are more frequent in the spring months of March, April and May. Tennessee also has a "secondary" severe weather season in November and December. Severe thunderstorms can, and do, occur anytime of the day and night and during any month of the year. Damaging

thunderstorm winds are much more common in Tennessee than tornadoes.

The National Weather Service defines a thunderstorm as “severe” when wind speeds reach 58

mph (50 kts) or stronger and/or 3/4 inch hail (or larger) falls from the storm. Winds from severe thunderstorms can well exceed 100 mph, overturning trailers, unroofing homes, and toppling trees and power lines. Most of the storm damage in the Mid-South is caused by “straight line winds” from thunderstorm downbursts. Severe Thunderstorm wind speeds may exceed the wind speeds of weak tornadoes. All thunderstorms are capable of producing deadly lightning.

PLEASE NOTE:

Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no warning!!

FIND SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. Go to a sturdy building that will withstand high winds. Avoid electrical appliances, metal pipes and corded telephones.

What is SKYWARN^TM?

SKYWARN^TM is a nationwide network of volunteer storm spotters trained by the National Weather Service (NWS) to report significant weather. Anyone with an interest in weather is welcome to participate. To become a trained storm spotter, you need to attend a storm training session, offered at various times and places across the MorristownCounty Warning Area.

Why SKYWARN^TM?

The National Weather Service's mission is to protect lives and property with safety being the top priority. When weather conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms or tornadoes to develop, a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch is issued. A severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued when severe weather has been reported by a SKYWARN^TM spotter or indicated by Doppler radar. SKYWARN^TM volunteers become the NWS's and local Emergency Management's eyes and ears, helping them to provide the public with better weather watch and warning services.

Who will activate SKYWARN^TM?

The NWS and/or the local emergency management authorities may activate the SKYWARN^TM net whenever there is a threat of severe weather or when the NWS issues a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch. In this case, information may be relayed through amateur radio repeaters. Localized events may be phoned directly to the NWS and/or local emergency management.

Where will SKYWARN^TM observations be taken?

SKYWARN^TM reports are relayed from on the road, while at work, or at your home. It is important not to jeopardize your own safety by placing yourself in the path of severe weather while participating in SKYWARN^TM.

SKYWARN^TM and Amateur Radio Operators

HAM radio operators have a special place in the SKYWARN^TM program. NWS offices have HAM equipment on site. SKYWARN^TM nets run by the volunteer amateur radio net control operators allow for reports to be directly heard at National Weather Service offices.

Well it does look like we will have an interesting day as we get closer to the evening hours. Right now temperatures are warming up nicely and expect that to continue as we go through the day with highs in the lower to mid 50s. This evening to late night hours is when the weather will change completely. Expect the activity to initially start as rain showers and then quickly change over to snow showers. The mountains could see 1-3 inches and the valley dusting to a inch. The reason for the small amounts is due to the warm ground temperatures and a fast moving system.
